Kanzeonji Temple stands as one of Japan's most historically significant Buddhist temples, founded by Emperor Tenji in honor of his mother, Empress Saimei, who ruled as one of only eight female regents in Japanese history. During its height, the temple complex included 49 sub-temples, making it the most important religious center in Kyushu during the Nara and Heian periods. Located in Dazaifu, Fukuoka Prefecture, the temple served as a spiritual cornerstone when Dazaifu functioned as the political center of western Japan.

The temple houses several nationally designated cultural treasures, most notably its ancient bronze bell, which ranks among Japan's oldest temple bells and holds National Treasure status. The grounds and ruins of Kanzeonji were designated as a National Historic Site in 1970, recognizing their exceptional historical value. The temple's treasure house contains numerous significant Buddhist sculptures, including large-scale works and a notable sculpture of Daikokuten.

Visitors can explore the temple grounds where foundation stones from ancient buildings remain visible, offering tangible evidence of the complex's former grandeur. The reinforced concrete treasure house, completed in 1959 as one of Japan's earliest temple cultural property repositories, displays the temple's collection of religious artifacts. The peaceful temple grounds provide an atmosphere conducive to contemplation while surrounded by centuries of Buddhist heritage.

Kanzeonji Temple is accessible via Dazaifu, located 15 kilometers southeast of central Fukuoka City. Take the Nishitetsu Railway to Dazaifu Station, which is the terminal of the Dazaifu Line branch off the main Tenjin Omuta Line. Direct buses also operate from Hakata Bus Terminal, with the journey from Fukuoka Airport taking less than 30 minutes. From Dazaifu Station, take a local bus to Uchiyama Bus Stop to reach the temple. Visitors holding the Fukuoka City Tourist Pass receive discounts on the temple's exhibition space admission.

What other travelers are saying about Kanzeonji Temple, Dazaifu

Quiet and less touristy. There is a museum with Buddhist statues that requires an admission fee. Towards the back, you can see the remains of the Monk's quarters. Interesting place.

A fascinating museum. The figures on the 2nd floor are incredible. The surrounding temple grounds are beautiful.
It is an old temple and just a visit if you are interested. For us it was a bit boring.
