Mt. Harunasan Ropeway

3.8 (464)Point Of InterestEstablishment

Mt. Haruna Ropeway offers visitors a swift ascent to the summit of Mt. Haruna, an active volcano in Gunma Prefecture that last erupted approximately 1,500 years ago. The ropeway was constructed to provide accessible transportation to the mountain's peak, connecting the base station near Lake Haruna to the summit observation deck at an elevation of 1,391 meters. This volcanic mountain has been a site of spiritual significance for centuries, with Haruna Shrine nestled at its base, drawing pilgrims and visitors seeking blessings from the mountain deity.

The mountain itself is part of the Jōmō Sanzan, a trio of sacred mountains in Gunma that includes Mt. Akagi and Mt. Myōgi. Lake Haruna, a caldera lake formed by ancient volcanic activity, sits beautifully at the mountain's base and serves as a scenic focal point for the region. The area's volcanic history has shaped its unique landscape, creating dramatic ridgelines and lush forests that change color dramatically with the seasons, making it particularly popular during autumn foliage season.

From the observation deck, visitors can enjoy panoramic views spanning the Kanto Plain, with clear days offering visibility of Mt. Fuji to the south and the surrounding mountain ranges. The summit area features walking trails that allow visitors to explore the crater rim and surrounding volcanic terrain. Winter transforms the landscape into a snowy wonderland, while spring and summer bring vibrant greenery and wildflowers.

Access to Mt. Haruna is most convenient by car, located approximately 20 kilometers from Takasaki Station on the JR lines, with the drive taking around 60 minutes. Public buses operate from Takasaki Station to the Lake Haruna area, though services may be limited depending on the season. The ropeway operates year-round weather permitting, with the round-trip fare priced at ¥840 for adults and ¥420 for children.

What other travelers are saying about Mt. Harunasan Ropeway

Not recommend. I have read comment that there is no view after going up to the peak by cable car, as many trees blocked the view. However, we took the cable car as the mountain is famous. Really, nothing to see at the peak, 1200 yen is too expensive

Amazing views over Gunma! On a clear day, you can even get a peek at Mt. Fuji way in the distance. It costs ¥450 for a one way trip or ¥850 for a roundtrip on the ropeway. Alternatively, you can hike for free.
Very nice ride and the view from the top of the mountain was amazing. Make sure to not go here after dark or in cloudy weather cause the view wouldn't be worth it.
Great views of Gunma Prefecture
